Students will learn drawing and painting in a fun environment, using techniques such as freehand sketching and pencil shading, and will discover how to use color, light, and shadow with soft pastel and acrylic paint. Students will create still lifes, gesture drawings, and paintings. |

Students will discover techniques of drawing and painting from realism to abstraction, using soft pastel and acrylic paints. Students will create still lifes, portraits, and landscapes. Supply list available upon registration. |

Gratton Fellowship Workshops
Thanks to the generosity of Lorene Johnson Gratton, a life-long supporter of our studio class program, the Roswell Museum and Art Center is able to offer a concentrated weekend workshop once per annum for adults. These workshops are designed for adults who normally might not be able to take advantage of such opportunities. Gratton Fellowships are open to 12 members of the community who demonstrate a strong art interest and financial need for scholarship assistance. They are awarded on a competitive basis. Learn how to produce a printing plate and make multiple copies from an original drawing or design. Students will become familiar with printmaking processes, tools, and techniques by making monoprints and linoleum block prints. Emphasis will be placed on individual creative growth. Adult projects require $10 supply fee at registration. |

IStudents will meet at the Museum in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:30 pm to discuss the technical and artistic aspects of photography, review film and digital cameras, and critique images. In teh late afternoon, students will travel to a field location for a photographic demonstration and shooting - learning to capture their own visions. Requirements: 35mm SLR film cameras, or 35mm digital SLR cameras, or digital compact cameras, (manual settings are helpful), tripod, preparedness for outdoor activity and transportation to our four field locations: White Sands, Three Rivers Petroglyphs, Ruidoso, and one location to be announced. |

Learn to make acrylic paintings that simulate the look of oil painting. Through still life, landscape, and figurative painting, students will learn paint mixing, application techniques, and color theory. Supply list available at registration. |

This class will teach the skills and supplies needed to make fused glass art. Participants will design and fuse up to six of small pieces each (examples: pendants, pins, bolos, earrings) using space age dichroic glass. Supply fee of 12.50 required at first class. |

Materials for adult classes are normally not provided and a supply list can be obtained at registration. Materials for children’s classes are normally provided. Full payment must accompany registration. Space may not be reserved prior to payment. Class fees will only be refunded during the first two weeks of class. Students needing special accommodations should provide advance notice to Ellen Moore, Curator of Education, well before the class starts. Scholarships for children are available on a limited basis and funded by the Roswell Museum and Art Center Foundation. Aria Finch holds a BA degree in Art Education from the University of Texas, El Paso, and has attended graduate school at North Texas State University and Texas Women’s University. After 7 years of teaching in the public school system, she joined the Museum teaching staff in 1979, and has subsequently built the Ceramics Program into a powerhouse. Sue Johnson, a native of Roswell, has always had a love for glass art and began fusing glass in 2001. She has taken fused glass classes in Santa Fe and Portland, OR. Currently she teaches at WeCree8 Gallery in Ruidoso and will teach at EMNU-R starting summer 2008. Her work can be seen at The Gallery in Roswell. Dorothy Peterson is an award-winning artist who has maintained a studio in Roswell since 1980. Locally and regionally, she has offered workshops and has taught college-level drawing and painting. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society. Theresa Pfarr holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, a BFA from the University of Cincinnati, and has studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has taught both basic and advanced painting courses. She is a past artist-in-residence at the RAIR program in Roswell and is a 2006 Puffin Foundation Grant recipient. Georgene Smyth is a potter who assists with the Ceramics Program at the Museum, is a member of the Pecos Valley Potters Guild, and was a kindergarten teacher in the Deming Schools. Uzma Saleemi holds a BFA degree in Graphic Design. Her work in painting and clay has been exhibited in various shows in New Mexico and Chicago. She works as a freelance graphic and interior designer. |
