Alex Kraft constructs ceramic sculptures that represent imagined life forms and their environments. Inspired by internal bodily systems such as organs, muscles, and bones, Kraft investigates the physical and emotional essences present in the body. Kraft then interprets these fundamental—sometimes intangible—properties through form, multi-fired oxidation firings, and a wide variety of surface treatments including slip trailing, inlay, and image transfer to produce individuals unto themselves, exuding their own life force independent of the original source. Kraft received her BFA degree in Ceramics and her BS degree in Art Education from Northern Arizona University in 2002. Since completing her MFA degree in 2006 from the University of Montana, she has participated in residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana; at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee; and at the Clay Studio of Missoula. Recently her work has been shown at Casper College in Wyoming, JFH Studio in Missouri, and Dunedin Fine Art Center in Florida. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art.
