This landmark exhibition features fifty-five works by twenty-six American photographers presenting diverse points of view, interpretations, and techniques that push the visual envelope of contemporary desert photography.

The medium of photography has assumed a prominent role in documenting the changing American landscape and Contemporary Desert Photography seeks to examine the artistic vision and expressions of altered panoramas. As desert communities become more sensitive to population growth, robust development, and new commercial land use there is a sense of urgency to address the impact of man’s presence on the land and the dilemma of reconciling human use with environmental values.

The exhibition is organized into three major themes: Land and Sky, Environment, and Living. Collectively, the artists in this exhibition have produced images that explore panorama, desolation, cultural curiosities, water, the sublime, majestic, harmonious, and disjunctive.

Featured artists include Thomas Barrow, Robert Dawson, John Divola, Terry Falke, Ed Freeman, Lee Friedlander, Jack Fulton, Peter Goin, Tim Goodman, Aaronel de Roy Gruber, Karen Halverson, Wanda Hammerbeck, Len Jenshel, Mark Klett, Stuart Klipper, Phil Marquez, Michael McMillen, Kathryn Miller/Michael Horner, Richard Misrach, Patrick Nagatani, Mark Ruwedel, Jim Sanborn, Martin Stupich, Michelle Van Parys, and Henry Wessel, Jr. This exhibition is organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by Pioneer Bank.
