Susan Marie Dopp presents a selection of paintings created during her residency over the past year from the series Ether. Inclusive of concersn she has been preoccupied with over the last ten years, this current work involved forms based on geometric configurations placed in relational interactivity. Employing elements of compositional tensions, intricate color relationships, and optical effects Dopp is reaching for a feeling of suspension and expansion, the sublime illusion of being liberated from time and space. She embraces the challenge of creating these events in a two-dimensional format.
Since receiving her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1987, Susan's work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. She has had numerous solo shows at Susan Cummins Gallery in Mill Valley and at Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco and New York. Awards include the SECA Award from SFMOMA, a Eureka Fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundaion, and a grant from the Pollack/Krasner Foundation. She has twice been invited to be a fellow at Yaddo, in Saratoga Springs, NY and at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art.
