September 19 - November 8, 2009

Soesemann’s recent work explores the conventional relationships between seeing and representing, using textile surfaces both to obscure and to reveal. Her constructions often incorporate translucent and opaque areas, manipulating light to bring perception into conflict with uncertainty, and engaging the basic processes of mind seeking meaning as a process of consciousness. Recent works reference architectural spaces and include larger scale scrim installations, quilts, and smaller scale fabric panels.

Petra Soesemann is Chair and Professor in the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Foundation Department. During 2009 she is on sabbatical leave to focus on her studio practice at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program.

She previously taught at Alfred University, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Previous awards include an artist’s residency in Spain; a Fulbright Fellowship to study Incan architecture in Peru; exhibition grant to Sao Paulo, Brazil; and travel grants to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala for research of Mayan art and architecture and to Turkey to study Islamic art and architecture as well as contemporary art.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program and the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. For more information on these programs, please visit their websites at: www.rair.org and www.roswellamoca.org
