The paintings, wall-reliefs and sculptures in this exhibition straddle the languages of abstraction and representation, combining beauty, pathos and humor. New Mexico Poet Lisa Gill writes that the works “achieve something akin to negative capability, the phrase used by John Keats to describe the ability to exist ‘. . . in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason.’” The exhibition title refers to Pollard’s preference for working in the studio at night, when diverse forms and high-octane color surprise her and illuminate the dark, and all activity is imbued with a wide-reaching spirit of play. Pollard has exhibited her work in New York City at PS 122, McKenzie Fine Arts, Janet Kurnetowski Gallery and Horse Trader Projects, and at other venues across the country, including a 2011 solo show at Warschaw Gallery, Los Angeles. She has attended numerous residencies including the CUE Foundation, NY, and is a recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Pollard's work has been reviewed in Art New England, and her work has been featured in New American Paintings and Newsweek online, in Peter Plagens' online slide show and essay about the heirs to the legacy of painter Vassily Kandinsky. A former resident of New Mexico, the artist has been a happy prodigal at RAiR. |
