Painters and sculptors often inform one another, and many artists have no difficulty shifting back and forth between two- and three-dimensions. Some meld sculptural form into the painted surface and vice versa.

Shared Sensibilities considers and juxtaposes two- and three-dimensional works from the Museum’s collection that share a visual narrative, stylistic choice, or thematic approach. From the representational to the abstract and the figurative to the minimalist, this exhibition delves into associations that link various works in a common dialogue.

Sculptor Keith Monroe’s undulating Woman Dressing is paired with an oil on canvas, Pink Reflected, by Catherine Kerr Hoch. With their approach to clarity and monochromatic force, the minimalist works of Stuart Arends, Robert Ray, and Ad Reinhardt eliminate extraneous elements to get at the essence of an idea—their juxtaposition creates a sublime interaction where one is challenged to see into the work. Tim Prythero’s iconic Last Emperor, a rundown trailer home, is punctuated by a Chuck Venrick photograph that alludes to rural architecture and decay.
